Whakatane builder Kent James formed Modern Builders in 2017 with a dream to create family homes of exceptional quality with an enjoyable, stress-free process.
The business evolved quickly and today, Modern Builders is a tight-knit team of experienced and knowledgeable builders who work alongside local architects, draughtsmen and tradies to deliver dream homes on time, on budget and on trend.
Changing perception, one home at a time
Kent says Modern Builders wants to challenge the popular belief that building a home is a stressful and daunting process.
“My aim is to make the design and building process as enjoyable and relaxing as possible,” he says.
“I am very budget-conscious, so all costs are carefully planned out, and there is open, honest and frequent communication with clients throughout the building process.”

A passion followed
Despite growing up on a dairy farm in Whakatane, Kent’s love of woodwork saw him pursue a career in the building industry.
In 2006 he moved to Cairns, Australia, where he spent 11 years forging a career in the high-end residential construction business as a builder and foreman.
“I love the entire process of building a house, from start to finish,” Kent says.
“From laying the foundations to handing over the keys, it’s all a real buzz.”

Kent is approachable and reliable, involved in each and every part of the building process from overseeing all building sites to liaising with clients and taking a place “on the tools” regularly.
The result of the team’s commitment and skill is a home that is warm and welcoming, featuring high-end specs and using modern construction techniques, tools and materials.
